GOOD NUTRITION GOD'S WAY

1 Corintians 10:31 (NIV) 31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

“Even the slightest change in your diet can generate a new body and a fresh mind. Avoid eating anything today that creates conflict in you. Observe how instantly your body manifests a grateful feeling.”

– Caroline Myss and Peter Occhiogrosso

Is Good Nutrition God's Way the magic combination of foods to eat, scriptures to read for weight loss, or has the potato chip diet finally been created and blessed by God? Of course not. It's about eating the rainbow assortment of foods that God has blessed us with.

I remember something that Oprah said in her video “Make the Connection” that really meant a lot. She said, and I’m paraphrasing, if there was a shortcut out there or a magic pill, she would have already bought it. And if Oprah couldn’t buy it….it can’t be bought.

Here’s the long story short answer to nutrition; if it doesn’t fly in the air, swim in the ocean, graze in a pasture, grow on a tree or under the ground, it’s probably not the best thing for you to eat. To this day I’ve never seen a cheeseburger grow on trees. As a side note; my mother and father were right. Money doesn’t grow on trees either.

As in most areas in our life, balance is important. A balance of good protein, carbohydrates and fat is the basis for a sound nutrition program. I don’t believe that eliminating entire food groups is a good idea. God has blessed us with an abundance of good, healthy food to eat.

Grocery stores stock all the fresh (the good stuff) in the perimeter of the building. The fresh produce is on one side, usually the meat and dairy products are in the back of the store and the bakery is on the other. The majority of your shopping should be done in these areas. I’m not sure where I got this list (I did not create it) but it’s a very good representation of foods that should be the mainstay in your diet.

If you are unsure of what a serving or portion is, it’s the size of the palm of your hand. For fruit, vegetables, rice, or potatoes, it’s about ½ cup. Then you need to make the choice of what kind of protein to eat. Is red meat better than chicken and so on. There are a number of good calorie counting books and websites that also give you the accurate division of proteins, carbohydrates and fats. I bet you intuitively know what you should be eating and how much.

We have meal plans that have been put together by a registered dietician. It takes all the guess work out of how many calories, meals to plan, even a grocery list.

When in doubt, good nutrition God's way is food in its most pure form; fruit, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains. Enjoy them all.
