Eat Moms Cooking without Dying

First appeared in Suavv Magazine.

Finally the time is here. It’s been months, for some people years since you’ve been around family. In this day and age people are so busy with work they have very little time to spend with family. But one thing for sure is when the holidays come; finally families gather together and share special moments. One thing about the holidays though is while we get the chance to see our families again; one thing we don’t account for is the weight one often gains from the holiday feast.

Ask anyone about thanksgiving and the first thing that comes up in their mind is food and how much of it they eat. Thanksgiving most certainly is a time to give thanks and to be grateful but often people are simply grateful and thankful that they can eat to the point their bellies pop out.

It’s often said that people during the holidays can put on average 3-10 lbs of fat. That’s not a misprint. Can you believe in just 2 months time you can actually become up to 10 lbs fatter? I don’t know about you but I simply cannot afford for that to happen to me and when you realize how difficult it is to drop body fat you will find that you can’t afford it either.

Now eating during the holidays does not have to be like this. Sure you can eat but how much you eat and what you’re eating definitely plays an important role in keeping the fat gain to a minimum. Also let’s not forget that during the holidays is the time also when people are so busy with shopping and flying all over the place that they perform very little to no exercise at all. The note to take away is make sure you move your butt during the holidays or you won’t recognize it when the holidays are over.

But I digress. Eating during the holidays could be a lot different if we were willing to make some minor changes to mom’s cooking during this time of year. When it comes to have the whole family together you often see foods like macaroni and cheese, collard greens, mashed potatoes, turkey necks, gravy, banana pudding, cornbread, biscuits, and fried chicken just to name a few. Now you might think it’s just one day that you’re eating this and thus is all right.

The point is thanksgiving is the setting tone for your whole holiday eating plan. If you’re going to eat, why not take care of your body by making wise food choices. It’s not that you can’t have the foods but making a healthier decision would definitely help your waistline while still keeping your belly full.

Here are some suggestions from Geovanni Derice, a certified personal trainer and owner of 4everToned Fitness in Brooklyn, NY(www.4evertoned.com) on how to make some of momma’s best foods healthier:

Not So Good Better Mashed Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Fried Chicken, Baked Chicken (or Grilled),Banana Pudding (White Sugar), Banana Pudding (Brown Sugar), also here are 2 takeaway tips to carry away when preparing the foods:Derice, owner of 4everToned Fitness also states “try to cook with brown flour or brown sugar as oppose to white sugar or flour. Brown sugar is less processed than the white variety. Processed goods are what help us pack on the pounds.”Baked or grilled your meats instead of frying. Frying foods has no nutritional value what so ever. Yes while the taste is good, your waistline and heart will not thank you years from now. When it comes to the holidays making the wiser decisions will ensure you not only a great time with family but will save you the agony of having to drop an extra 10 lb of fat. Enjoy your momma’s cooking and be sure to save me a plate.
