WHY SHOULD I EXERCISE
3 John 1:2 (New Living Translation)
2 Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body
is as healthy as I know your soul is.
“Nurture your physical self by eating the right foods, getting
sufficient rest and relaxation, and exercising on a regular basis. A good
exercise program will build your body in three areas: endurance, flexibility,
and strength.” – Steven R. Covey
Why should I exercise? Now we are on to a subject that is near and dear
to my heart; one of the key essentials to caring for God’s Temple.
I’m going to start with listing a few of my pet peeves. I hear
so many people grudgingly say any or all of the following:
- Sigh…I have to go workout
- They do an exercise set on one side of the body and then say, “do
I have to do the other side too”?
- I was hoping you would call and cancel
- I don’t feel like it
- I was going to call you and cancel
- My _____ hurts (minor ache)
- I hate walking, running, etc.
- Why should I exercise?
The reason these are my pet peeves is that if you have good health, you’re
blessed. If you have both of your legs, arms or whatever other body part,
God has blessed you. I look at people that have overcome tremendous obstacles
and think, how do they do it? How do they have such a wonderful attitude?
How have they accomplished so much? I saw a woman on the television last
night that skis 50 miles per hour down a slope and she has one leg….amazing!
Start off your day with an attitude of gratitude. Thank God that you
are healthy. Thank God that you have the opportunity to walk on your own,
that you have 2 arms, have a healthy heart and lungs. Glorify God by using
your body and taking care of it. Keep it healthy. Please don’t wait
until you have lost your health, had a heart attack or have had a stroke
before you start taking care of your body the way you should have in the
beginning.
Too much of the time (myself included) we wait until we have hit rock
bottom before we do what we should have been doing all along. It’s
kind of the same way that some of us make the declaration that Jesus Christ
is our Savior. We’re sick and tired of being sick and tired before
we decide to make any changes. Too often we even hit rock bottom before
we decide to make a change in our lives.
Get moving and keep moving. You may not believe me now but, you’re
going to feel great when you get your body in motion! Here are just a
few of the benefits of weight training and cardiovascular training:
- Increased strength and stamina
- Improved appearance
- Increased self-confidence
- Improve athletic performance
- Decreased risk of injury
- Decreased body fat stores
- Increased energy
- Accelerate your metabolism
- Improved balance, agility and coordination
- Increased core strength
- Improved postureReduction in blood pressure and resting heart
rate
- Decreased risk for osteoporosis
- Reduced risk of adult onset diabetes
- Increased motivation, focus and clarity
- Decreased total cholesterol
- Increased aerobic capacity
- Decreased anxiety, tension, and depression
- Increased heart function
- Increased capillary density and blood flow to active muscles
- Improved sleep
- Increased flexibility
- Slow down the aging process
Why should I exercise? With all those reasons it has to be worth lacing
up your tennis shoes and at least going for a walk.
